The leaves are showing their fall colors, and chili sounds like a great dinner option with the arrival of cooler nights. It’s time to prepare to switch your HVAC system over to Heat. We asked our friends at Axberg Heating & Cooling to share a few easy tips to consider before for the coming winter.

  • Turn on the thermostat.

Switch to heating mode and set the temperature a couple of degrees higher than the current room temperature. If you don’t hear the heat kick on within a minute, pull off the cover and make sure the wire connections are secure. If the connections are fine, make sure the power source to the HVAC system is turned on. If it’s still not working, check the furnace fan, blower or heat pump.

  • Check the air filters.

Change the furnace filters regularly. Some suggest every three months. At least take a look at it every 30 days. You’ll be able to tell if it needs to be changed. Stock up on filters during the warmer months when you can often find a bargain.

  • Remove items stored near the furnace.

Pay close attention to anything that is likely to catch fire. Also remove any household items that sit on top of or in front of your air ducts and return vents.

  • Test the igniter switch.

On an old system, you might have to relight the pilot. Newer systems have electronic ignitors. If the ignitor isn’t working, push the reset button. If that doesn’t do the trick, check your breaker. Still not working? Call in a professional.

  • Test your carbon monoxide detectors.

Routinely test or replace carbon monoxide detectors as they help protect you from the silent killer.

  • If you have a propane or oil powered furnace, check the tank level.

If you are running low, contact your fuel provider and have them fill it up now. It is much cheaper to buy during the warmer months than in the middle of winter.

Axberg Heating & Cooling will guarantee:

  • Improved safety – During routine maintenance checks, technicians are able to repair small problems that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. Even if these issues start small, if left unattended, they could potentially lead to bigger problems. Without maintenance, you could experience a gas leak or dangerous carbon monoxide levels.
  • Lower risk of breakdowns – Because technicians are able to make these small repairs during maintenance, the chance of your unit breaking down is much smaller. They’re able to catch and repair small problems before they become more serious.
  • Improved performance – Your system will work much better after being cleaned and repaired during a tune-up. The technician who performs your maintenance will also make sure your furnace is receiving proper airflow. Restricted airflow places an unnecessary strain on your unit that can potentially lead to a shorter lifespan and a need for more repairs.
  • Increased energy efficiency – During maintenance, your furnace burner and heat exchanger will be cleaned and inspected. This helps increase the efficiency of your unit throughout the colder months.
  • Maintained manufacturer’s warranty – If your furnace is under a manufacturer’s warranty, scheduling annual tune-ups is even more important. Most warranties become void if the system isn’t regularly maintained.
  • Longer unit lifespan – By scheduling maintenance once a year, you’re lowering the risk of breakdowns and extending the lifespan of your unit.
