The Chicago Bears suffered one of the most unbelievable and embarrassing losses
in the history of the franchise yesterday at Soldier Field squandering a 10 point
lead late in the 4 th quarter to the Detroit Lions!! Yes, those Detroit Lions, winners
of exactly one playoff game in the Super Bowl era. Was it the play calling, a lack
of effort, a lack of execution, all of the above? It really doesn’t matter as the
bottom line is the Bears are in the midst of their first six game losing streak since
2002.

It is easy to point out the ineptness of Mitch Trubisky or question the play calling
of Matt Nagy but the current Bears problems go deeper. Since the year 2000 the
Bears have won 157 regular season games for a .491 winning percentage. Round
that number up and yep you are exactly at the middle of the road and .500. If
mediocrity is what you crave the Chicago Bears have been your team since the turn
of the century. Oh and the Bears also haven’t won a playoff game since 2010. At
this point team president Ted Phillips has proved one thing, he isn’t real good at
his job. He is very average however. The McCaskey family needs to take a real
hard look at whether the results or lack thereof should lead to finding a new team
president. One more thing remember Phillips signed off on the whole Marc
Trestman experience as well.

Now let’s talk about current GM Ryan Pace. Pace took over in 2015 and rode with
Jay Cutler that year and again in 2016. Who knew those may have been the golden
years of Pace’s quarterback choices! 2017 saw the trading of valuable draft capital
to move up and take Mitch Trubisky with the 2 nd overall pick. If that wasn’t bad
enough he then gave big money to Mike Glennon to be the placeholder for that
season. Glennon was terrible and forced Mitch into a starting position he wasn’t
ready for. 2018 saw Matt Nagy enter the picture as the Bears new head coach. The
Bears caught lightning in a bottle and went 12-4. 2019 saw a big Trubisky
regression which led to Pace acquiring Nick Foles. 2020 showed us that Nick Foles
is a great backup quarterback, not a starting one. It has also shown us Pace needs to
go.

This brings us to head coach Matt Nagy who burst on the scene in 2018. Nagy by
all accounts is a very likable up beat guy, but for an offensive guru he is very much
Marc Trestman like. The offense has seen steady decline under Nagy after year
one. His insistence to do things his way whether his scheme is best for his players
or not has been a source of constant consternation for Bears fans. Personally I think
at some point Nagy will be a good head coach just won’t be in Chicago.

All of this adds up to a need for a total rebuild which means that the McCaskeys
will stick with what they got and we will be right back here in the same place again
next year. The definition of insanity, much like the insanity of the Bears loss
yesterday.
