If your plan to bet the Kentucky Derby is to pick your favorite number, select the horse with the coolest name or simply pick a name out of a hat, STOP! The odds-makers at www.SportsBettingDime.com have found four betting trends that can help novice bettors pick a winner.

Here are four trends from the odds-makers @SBD ( https://twitter.com/SBD) with the horses that fit the criteria noted. Please note, the final field and final odds have not yet been determined.

Since 1980, 29 of 40 horses (73%) have won a prep race leading up to the Kentucky Derby. The six horses that qualify are; Essential Quality, Known Agenda, Rock Your World, Bourbonic, Super Stock, and King Fury

In 146 Kentucky Derby races, 70 percent of the winning horses have been one of two colors: bay and chestnut. Five of these six horses pass the color test: Known Agenda, Rock Your World, Bourbonic, Super Stock, and King Fury

The results from the past 12 years show that half the winners (50%) went off with odds between 3-1 and 8-1: Two of the remaining five horses currently have odds in this range: Known Agenda (6/1) and Rock Your World (5/1).

Since 1980, 22 of 31 jockeys (71%) have commanded the same horse in the final prep race before the Kentucky Derby: Known Agenda
