Now that things are opening up and we are able to travel again, why not check out a zoo near you! Zoos are a wonderful way to spend the day. Whether you’re by your self or with a group, zoos are a great way to experience animals from all over the world, up close! Remember, your admission price helps to feed and care for the animals on display.

We’re all familiar with the larger zoos in the area like Milwaukee County, Lincoln Park and Brookfield. But what about the smaller zoos that you might not be as familiar with?

Below is a list of these wonderful, smaller zoos that are all within 2 hours or less of Rockford that would make a fantastic day trip for the whole family!

Polar Bear

Henry Vilas Zoo – Madison, WI – 1.5 hrs from Rockford

This is one of the last FREE zoos in the country! Donations are gladly accepted and appreciated, but entry is 100% FREE! This small zoo features a host of different animals to view. There is a children’s zoo for the smaller kids where they can climb a huge man-made Boab tree, ride the carousel and even feed the goats. Lots of places to sit and rest. Over all a great place to spend the day!

 

 

 

Red River Hogs

Miller Park Zoo – Bloomington, IL – 2 hrs from Rockford

Small family-friendly zoo located in the local park. Wonderful animal exhibits without alot of walking. Perfect for those that have difficulty walking or with small children as this zoo only takes about an hour to complete.

 

 

 

 

Takin

Peoria Zoo – Peoria, IL – 2 hrs from Rockford

This zoo has a fantastic layout including the wallaby-walkabout where you can get up close with wallabys, emus and other critters from down under. Check out the budgie (parakeet) feeding area where you can feed the birds by hand. This zoo even hasone of the coolest creatures you’ll ever see….the Takin! (pictured above) Their collection includes animals from Asia, Africa, Austrailia and the Tropics.

 

 

 

Lions

Niabi Zoo – Coal Valley, IL – 2 hrs from Rockford (near Davenport, Iowa)

Leopards and Zebras and Bats, Oh My! This beautiful little zoo has everything you could want in a zoo. There’s a barnyard area where you can feed the goats and pet the pigs. You can feed the Giraffes and get up close to see the Bald Eagles or the Snow Leopards. There’s a carousel and a train ride too. The zoo is tucked away off the beaten path but well worth the trip!

 

 

 

Gorilla

Racine Zoo – Racine, WI – 2 hrs from Rockford

From barnyard animals to Rhinos, Penguins, Lions and more. Another great zoo without a ton of walking. This is another wonderful zoo if you have little ones. Located just off of Lake Michigan, there’s alot of other great stuff to do while in Racine.
