Brothers Anthony Markanich and Nick Markanich of the Northern Illinois University men’s soccer team have been selected in the Major League Soccer Super Draft.

Anthony was selected in the first round, 26th overall, by the Colorado Rapids and Nick was drafted in the second round, 30th overall, by FC Cincinnati.

Anthony Markanich finished his Huskie career with 24 assists, tied for second-most in NIU history, and 58 total points, ninth-best in school history. He is also the first NIU student-athlete selected in the first round of a professional sports draft since Jimmie Ward was taken 30th overall by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Nick Markanich led the nation in scoring during the 2021 season, scoring 16 goals. He also tied A.J. Chastonay of Belmont for the national lead in game-winning goals with seven and was third in the country with 37 total points.
