ROCKFORD — Mayor Tom McNamara on Monday proclaimed this April to be Rockford Area Habitat for Humanity Month, and the organization is has several ways you can support its efforts.

“Thank you for supporting our mission and our ministry. Thank you for believing in the work that we do,” Keri Asevedo, executive director of Rockford Area Habitat for Humanity, said after the proclamation was read during Monday’s City Council meeting. “We will work tirelessly to make you all very proud.”

The nonprofit has helped house nearly 500 children in safe and affordable homes through its building, rehab and repair efforts.

The proclamation outlined the need for affordable housing in the Rockford region and declared “the efforts of organizations like Habitat for Humanity, nonprofit housing professionals, financial institutions, elected officials, and government must be combined to address the immense challenge of ensuring that every person in Rockford has access to safe, affordable housing.”

Asevedo said that Habitat is looking forward to several upcoming events to engage community members in the work of increasing access to safe and affordable housing.

“This acknowledgement of Habitat’s impact on the community is incredibly humbling,” Asevedo said in a news release. “We ultimately hope that this proclamation will help to raise awareness of the need for safe and affordable housing in Rockford, and that our community would continue to come together to address this need in tangible ways.”
