ROCKFORD — The region’s largest real estate developer is expanding its footprint in Illinois with a new development in Sterling.

First Midwest Group is investing approximately $2.5 million to build a commercial property at 4404 E. Lincolnway in Sterling to house up to five businesses. Two companies have confirmed interest in the property, one of which is a bank that plans to open around the end of the year, the company said in a news release.

Construction of the 12,000-square-foot building is scheduled to begin June 1. Additional space will be available for future tenants.

First Midwest Group is headquartered in Rockford, but has been investing in Sterling since 2012.

Businesses that include T-Mobile, Starbucks, K Jewelers and Buffalo Wild Wings, among others, occupy commercial space in the Sterling area developed by First Midwest Group.
