ROCKFORD — Gasoline prices have risen a little more than 6 cents per gallon in the last week, and there is potential for prices to rise again, according to a GasBuddy analyst.

GasBuddy’s survey of 139 gas stations in Rockford showed that prices are about 53 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and $2.07 per gallon higher than a year ago. The average price at the pump is $5.26 per gallon.

“For the first time ever, last week saw the national average reach the $5 per gallon mark, as nearly every one of the nation’s 50 states saw prices jump,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “For now, the upward momentum may slow down, but prices are still just one potential supply jolt away from heading even higher.”

The national average price of gasoline has risen nearly 16 cents per gallon in the last week, making the national average rise up about 57 cents per gallon compared to a month ago, according to GasBuddy.

In contrast, the price of diesel has fallen 4 cents nationally in the past week and stands at $5.50 per gallon.

The cheapest station in Rockford was priced at $4.91 per gallon on Sunday, while the most expensive was $5.39 per gallon.

While the demand for gasoline is low this summer, the prices aren’t decreasing.

“Gasoline demand, while rising seasonally, is still well below previous records, but remains impressive with prices in all states at record levels,” De Haan said. “Should the rise in price finally start to slow demand, we could see some breathing room, but for now, it seems like Americans are proving resilient to record highs.”
