Netflix has sued Rockford native Emily Bear and Abigail Barlow, her partner in the award-winning “The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical,” accusing the duo of copyright infringement.

The complaint was filed Friday in federal court in Washington three days after the pair performed in a sold-out show at the city’s Kennedy Center, according to a report from Reuters.

Netflix said in its complaint that it repeatedly asked Bear and Barlow to halt the project, but the duo forged ahead.

“The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical” was an immediate success, hitting No. 1 on iTunes pop albums shortly after its release in September. It was also hailed by critics, and in April Bear and Barlow took home a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album. They won in a category full of celebrated composers including Andrew Lloyd Webber and Stephen Schwartz, who wrote the Broadway hit “Wicked.”

The album consists of 15 original songs inspired by the popular Netflix series “Bridgerton.”
