ROCKFORD — An Italian restaurant known for its sweet desserts is set to close at year’s end.

Cucina di Rosa, 1620 N. Bell School Road, announced on Facebook Monday night that it would close Jan. 1 after more than six years in business.

Owner Rose Mary Leggio responded to a few customers’ messages to say she would still be making desserts, including the cannolis that inspired her first Rockford shop, Cannoli Cafe. She said more details will come at a later date.

“After several long family conversations, it was decided that our physical health has to be held as a priority in this challenging climate as we are also pursuing other projects, so stay tuned,” the restaurant posted on Facebook. “With all of that being said, we hope that you all have the opportunity to stop in beforehand so we can thank you for the 6+ years of being a part of this amazing community. We appreciate you all so very much.”

The restaurant is continuing to take holiday treat orders, and it will host its New Year’s Eve Party, it wrote on Facebook. The party, featuring live music from The Rocksurfers, goes from 7 p.m. Dec. 31 to 12:30 a.m. New Year’s Day.

Dozens of customers poured in messages of support on Facebook, thanking Leggio and her team for their dedication to the restaurant, which opened in 2016.

Leggio couldn’t immediately be reached for comment. We’ll provide an update if we hear back from her. (Update: Read the latest story about the restaurant here.)
