ROCKFORD — A nonprofit that preserves the only building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for a person with a disability received accolades for its preservation efforts.

The Laurent House Foundation was a recipient of the 2022 Wright Spirit Award in the public category for its commitment to preserving and sharing the legacy of Wright and the former homeowners, Kenneth and Phyllis Laurent.

The award from the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy recognizes owners and stewards of Wright buildings who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to preserving and restoring the remaining buildings designed by Wright, an influential American architect who died in 1959.

The Laurent House Foundation just completed its ninth tour season of the home, 4646 Spring Brook Road. The home attracted 2,500 visitors this past season.

The Laurent House, which was designed for a disabled veteran and his family, is a rare, one-owner, hemicycle Usonian home complete with original Wright designed furnishings and lighting. The Laurents both died in 2012 and the home opened as a public museum in 2014.

The house was considered by Wright to be one of his 38 most important works and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Illinois Wright Trail.
