ROCKFORD — Tropical Smoothie Cafe plans to open its first location in the city this spring.

The national chain specializes in made-to-order smoothies, fresh sandwiches, flatbreads and wraps. It’s coming to 1998 McFarland Road, suite 133, which is in front of Meijer along Perryville Road and in a strip center with Gloss Nail Bar and space for other future tenants.

A company spokesperson told the Rock River Current the target opening date is April 1. Interior construction work is ongoing now.

It’s unclear what other businesses will fill that space. Calls to the developers, First Midwest Group, were not returned.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe is also coming to Machesney Park this spring in another First Midwest Group development near the corner of Illinois 173 and North Second Street, just outside of Old Navy. That 5,800-square-foot, three-tenant structure is under construction. An opening date has not been set.

The Machesney Park property will also house Five Guys and a third tenant yet to be named.
