ROCKFORD — Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden has activated a new solar panel system designed to offset nearly all of its electricity usage.

The photovoltaic system generates 29.7kW electricity a year and allows for any extra electricity produced on bright, sunny days to be sent back to the utility grid. The nonprofit outdoor destination receives a credit for the extra electricity, which helps reduce its utility bill.

“It is a priority for us to be an eco-friendly, sustainable garden and this investment into renewable energy allows us to decrease our carbon footprint,” said Alexander Mills, executive director of Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden. “We are grateful to be able to provide enjoyment, education, and inspiration to all people while demonstrating what it means to be good stewards of our environment.”

The installation was paid for in part by a $43,436 grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation, an independent organization that was funded by a $225 million endowment from ComEd.
