ROCKFORD — The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a new phone scam in which the caller claims to work for the department.

Similar scams surfaced last year, too, prompting a pair of warnings from the sheriff.

In the latest scam, the caller claims the person on the other end of the line has missed a court date and has a warrant out for their arrest. The perpetrator then tries to solicit money to vacate the warrant.

“The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office DOES NOT call residents to tell them they have an outstanding warrant nor ask for any money,” the department said in a news release. “Individuals should NEVER provide anyone with their personal credit card or bank information.”

The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office urges anyone who receives a similar call to report it immediately by call the non-emergency number at 815-282-2600.
