ROCKFORD — Spencer’s is adding a second location to the Rockford area with a new store at Forest Plaza on East State Street.

The irreverent store known for novelty and gag gifts, music-themed merchandise, body jewelry, clothing, collectibles and other unconventional items is set to fill the former Sally Beauty Supply at 6125 E. State St. in Forest Plaza. Sally Beauty Supply is now at 741 S. Perryville Road next to Chipotle.

Spencer’s has operated inside the CherryVale Mall, 7200 Harrison Ave. in Cherry Valley, for years and will continue to do so when the second location opens later this fall, staff at the mall confirmed. An opening date for the new location has not been announced.

Pineville, Missouri-based Meyers Construction started renovating roughly 3,000-square-foot space in early September, according to a city building permit. The cost of renovations was estimated at $200,000.

Spencers opened its first retail store in 1963 at Cherry Hill Mall in New Jersey, and it now has more than 670 stores across the United States and Canada.
